Annie  Strohm
I was  tracing back the   Annie  Strohm ( my grandmother)  born in 1872 in Dunnsville   who was married to George  James McKnight based in Hamilton  Ontario  born in 1867

Garrett Strohm
Her  father  was  Garrett Dennis  Strohm of  Dunnsville Ontario  born in 1836 and died in 1924 at 88 years old  and her mother was  Jane Brown, born in 1841 and died in 1920( Buried in Riverside Cemetary in  Dunnsville)  Her  parents  were   William Brown  born in England and Anne Eaton born in Ireland

Eva Strohm

Eva Strohm was married to   Jacob Strohm ______  He   died on   1791   and his estate was divided up between her and her  children

Christian, Jacob, David and Eva

In 1808 she  left the US
In 1810 her son Christian joined her in Dunnsville.
Since the War of 1812  required  able  men to join the local militia  I  need to trace the  local Militia records and pension records to see if  Christian  participated or  if  he  paid for a substitute

John  Strohm 
John Strohm came over with his father and mother from Wurtenberg Germany at  9 years old 
His father died on the ship travelling to the US.    The  mother was from Berne, Switzerland
 
His wife was  Eva  Blenheim from  Berne, Switzerland  and her  relatives include  _____ and  _____ and they were  Anabaptists

WW 1 Records

Researching  the military records  of  HB  McKnight  took to the online  resources  for the  attestation records of military service.   The  records revealed  a couple of interesting findings.  He  served in Rhyl, North Wales which the infamous  riots at the end of the war and secondly that he  gained permission to marry and his  pay package was re-routed to his new wife in Liverpool

The  records   indicate that he  was stationed at the  North Wales military barracks in North Wales where it was the site of the largest Canadian  Army Riots on March, 4 and 5  1919

Stationed at Rhyl, Kimmel Park, North Wales

This is the site  which saw the  15,000  Canadian troops  riot   due to  delays in staying in England, rations  cut in half, pay package was delayed,  strikes in Canada delaying ships,  heating fuel cuts and more

The result  five  soldiers  died

• Private David  Gillian, Florence, Cape Breton
• Private William Tarasavitch of the Canadian Railway Troops, who was thought to be a ringleader and bayonetted to death.
• Corporal Joseph Young, Rhode Island
• Gunner J.F. Hickman of the CFA, apparently killed by a stray bullet. He was buried at Bodelwyddan on March 10th 1919 but then later exhumed and taken to his next of kin at Dorchester, New Brunswick.
• Signalman  William Hanley, Talbot, Alberta

All buried in St. Margaret Cemetery,Bodelwyddan

Plus  23 soldiers  injured during  riot 

Forty one rioters were later court martialed and 24 were tried and convicted of mutiny though many sentences were later commuted   Sentences  ranged from 90  days to 10 years in prison

The  newspapers of the time  suggested that  the  riots  were  started by  Bolsheviks

"A Brunswickian Major and VC holder trampled to death, a hundred casualties, civilian women molested, drunken sprees, fires uncontrolled, a mob of 5000 advancing on Rhyl, 15 civilians arrested, Bolshevick ring- leaders"

By the end of the March most of the 17,000 soldiers were repatriated to Canada. Therefore the whole affair, which was subject to the 75 years rule of military secrecy, was officially forgotten in the aftermath of the world war,

Starting the Journey

Starting the Journey The start of this investigation of the into the history of the McKnight and Strohm family commenced with the presentations of WW 1 Local Stories One version of our WW One Slideshow is here

Bob and I have done  numerous  presentations providing an overview of the  WW 1 from the big picture, Canadian and our own local Oshawa history.   The last  set of stories  focused on individuals  who are related to the presenters.  In the early presentations  we focused on Robert Bell and his  Great Grandfather  who was a Dr. Barnado  child  from the UK,  a local  Nursing Sister  Sara  Garbutt who died overseas and other  locals.  

The current  slideshows  now include my connection via  my father  who was  Sgt Major  HB  McKnight   who was part of the CEF and served  in England.     As in our  presentations  we will  add resources to the posts and a page resource
